Valentine’s Day with Vosges Haut-Chocolat


Valentine’s Day. That gushy, “love is in the air” day when heart strings are tugged, bouquets are assembled, and chocolates are indulged. What started off as a day commemorating Valentinus (a Christian martyr who performed weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry in the 5th century) is now an occasion to splurge on skillfully-prepared saccharine gifts for loved ones (because we all know when it comes to edible good they deserve stellar taste and presentation). And when that day comes around every year, I like to stop by Lincoln Park and pick up a few pieces from my favorite chocolate store in Chicago — Vosges Haut-Chocolat.

An intriguing “chocolate temple” with sweet concoctions made with the finest ingredients from around the world, Vosges Haut-Chocolat was founded by chocolatier Katrina Markoff who has “created a sensory experience that nurtures awareness of and appreciation for the world’s diverse cultures” via her use of different spices, flowers, herbs and liqueurs. There’s a unique theme every season; last Valentine’s day I pretty much devoured the Renegade Heart truffles in one setting. This year the Valentine’s Day-inspired set is the Collection du Coeur — a 17 piece chocolate assortment filled with delicious truffles, bonbons, and bites. From your traditional salted caramel and Sicilian sea salt, to wild cards like toasted curry masala and pink Fijian ginger, there’s a vast array of delectables for everyone to delight in! A few other Valentine’s Day specials I’ve picked up are:

  • Love Goddess Petits Gateaux – 4 piece chocolate petits with guajillo and chipotle chilies, enrobed in 62% cacao dark chocolate and adorned with 23-karat gold leaf and red flower petal

  • Bapchi’s Caramel Toffee Heart – crunchy, salty-sweet caramel toffee sprinkled with pink Himalayan salt, coated with deep milk chocolate and finished off with roasted, organic walnuts and pecans

  • Dulce de Leche within Strawberry Hibiscus White Chocolate – 6 white chocolate hearts with strawberry and hibiscus powder, filled with dulce de leche caramel and topped with Hawaiian black salt
